I need advise about a 'brown turkey' fig tree,?

This fig is at least ten years old,never ben re potted and I live in North Arkansas.How do I prepare it for the fall and winter?Someone said just leave it outside in a sheltered spot but I'm afraid of loosing it. Advise welcome and appreciated.
